Developing a Modern and Sustainable Agriculture

Tien Giang is accelerating the transformation from the mindset of "agricultural production" to "agricultural economy", developing in a modern and sustainable direction, increasing competitiveness, integrating multi-value into products and increasing revenue for the people. The locality strives to become a developed province in the southern key economic region by 2025.

Located in the largest food production area in the country, Tien Giang has a rich and diverse structure of plants and animals, in which a number of key products have a large output, account for a high proportion and have been forming concentrated raw material areas. Fruit output reached 1.61 million tons/year while vegetable output was 1.17 million tons/year. The total poultry herd reached 17.7 million heads. Aquaculture production reached 307,000 tons/year.

In the first six months of 2022, added value (production price 2010) in agriculture, forestry and fishery increased by 3.84% (increased by 1.57% year-on-year), of which agriculture increased by 3.72% (increased by 1.25% year-on-year). Fruit production increased by 1.7% (reaching 865 thousand tons), vegetable production increased by 3.9% over the same period (reaching 722,000 tons); pig herd increased by 3.3% (reaching 280,000 heads); and seafood production increased by 4.7% (reaching 153 thousand tons).

By the end of June 2022, the whole province had 131/143 new rural communes (accounting for 91.6%), 26 newly improved rural communes (accounting for 18.2%), and 6 districts and towns completing new rural tasks, meeting the standards of new rural districts.

Mr. Nguyen Van Man, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang province, said that Tien Giang is promoting agricultural development in a modern and sustainable direction. In the immediate future, the province strives to increase GRDP in agriculture, forestry and fishery by 3-4%, implement agricultural restructuring in association with new rural construction, strive to achieve and exceed the basic targets of the sector. In the year, there will be at least 12 more communes meeting new rural standards, 11 communes meeting new advanced rural standards, 2 new model rural communes, and 1 district recognized as meeting new rural standards.

Regarding investment attraction orientation, in the period of 2022 - 2025, the province will continue to focus on developing fruit into a strategic commodity; focus on attracting and calling for investment in the field of deep processing of fruit-related products. Besides, Tien Giang will prepare a favorable environment to invite investment in the 200ha livestock area in Tan Phuoc district, the aquaculture area in Tan Phu Dong district, the fishery logistics service area in Go Cong Dong district and Cho Gao district.

In the coming time, the province's agriculture sector will continue to implement the Restructuring Adjustment Scheme in association with Resolution 10-NQ/TU of the Provincial Party Committee on economic - urban development in 03 regions. Tien Giang will also implement solutions to reorganize production, apply science and technology, implement production - consumption linkages on key products with competitive advantages of each region.

In addition, the province will effectively implement the projects: "Crop reducing, crop conversion and crop structure in Eastern districts by 2025"; “Developing dragon fruit and durian trees until 2025”; "Construction of crop and aquaculture structure in the northern area of National Highway 1 of the province"; "The chain of production - consumption of key agricultural products such as: dragon fruit, durian, Hoa Loc mango, quail, magpie chicken.”

Along with that, there are programs to support businesses and farmers to apply GAP standards, which focus on developing products with competitive advantages of each region associated with consumption links, environmental protection and climate change adaptation.
