Kien Giang Development Plan by 2015 and Vision to 2020

Kien Giang province is about to build Thai Gulf economic corridor as a spine for regional development; thus, it also plans to build new coastal urban areas along the National Highway No. 80 together with Phu Quoc urban area to form a key economic zone with three centres of Rach Gia, Ha Tien and Phu Quoc.

 

In addition to developing Rach Gia city into a powerful sea economic centre, Kien Giang province will drive Ha Tien into a big tourism and service centre in the region and develop Phu Quoc Island into high-level sea eco-tourism centre in the region.

 

Moreover, the province will intensify agricultural and forestry development in the island with priority to preserving its ecosystem and creating harmonious environment for tourism services; maintaining local seafood production and expansion into new seawaters; boosting aquaculture with focus on high-value species, specialties and ornamental fishes to serve tourism and exports; developing food and beverage industries, production of consumed goods, jewelleries, souvenirs, maintenance services for seagoing transport and seafood processing, breeding and netting; forming some industrial complexes in Duong To and An Thoi to facilitate clean and high-tech industries to serve tourism and exports.

 

The province will not only build synchronic infrastructure for water drainage, post and telecommunications to serve rapid development, ensure national security and defence in island but also place attention to construction of main roads connection An Thoi to Duong Dong and Bai Thom, roads around the island and supporting roads in tourism sites and residential areas as well as building tourism ports in the Dat Do bay, Duong Dong and Bai Vong ports; cargo ports of An Thoi and Vinh Dam and some passenger ports to serve tourism services.

 

The province will also build a diesel-fuelled power plant, develop wind energy, solar energy, build undersea power cable to bring electricity to the island as well as synchronic power grids in the island and place due attention to construction of Duong To international airport to serve two million passengers per year once fully operational in 2010.

 

Besides nucleus urban area of Rach Gia-Ha Tien-Phu Quoc, Kien Giang province plans to build four ecological areas from now to 2010 and a vision through 2020, comprising Long Xuyen quadrangle, the western Hau River, Ca Mau peninsular, and etc. Each economic zone will have a centre for development of other supporting urban areas.

 

The province will allocate an area of 2,366 square kilometres for industrial and service development in the Long Xuyen quadrangle, accounting for 37.7 % of the provincial total acreage. The area comprises of Ha Tien border gate special zone covering all wards and towns of the Ha Tien Township to develop high-value economic sectors with focus on services in combination with industry, agriculture and fishery. Remaining districts of Kien Luong, Hon Dat, Rach Gia Township and a part of Tan Hiep and Chau Thanh districts should focus on service and industry in combination with agriculture, forestry and aquaculture. The western Hau River area should focus on high-yield rice and agro product processing industry development with a total area of 1,334 square kilometres, representing 21 % of the provincial acreage, covering districts of Go Quao, Giong Rieng and part of Tan Hiep district. The Ca Mau peninsular will place focus on the development of fishery, forestry and agriculture with a total area of 1,879 square kilometres, accounting for 30 % of the provincial acreage, covering districts of An Bien, An Minh, and Vinh Thuan. The Hai Dao area “ islands area” that has acreage of 690 square kilometres covering Kien Hai and Phu Quoc districts, accounting for 11.3 % of the provincial acreage, will focus on development of service, industry, fishery and tourism.
