Nam Dinh province is doing its best to improve infrastructure and create tourism products to meet increasing tourism demand. Reporter Huong Ly interviewed Mr Nguyen Cong Khuong, Head of Nam Dinh Tourism Promotion Centre (Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism on this issue.
Could you please introduce something about the provincial tourism potential?
Nam Dinh has significant tourism potential, with both natural and human tourism resources. With over 1,650 historical and cultural vestiges, and relics of architectural, cultural and historical value, Nam Dinh is widely known for its unique features related to the local communities. Some typical cultural vestiges are Tran Temple, Phu Giay, Co Le pagoda, Keo Pagoda in Hanh Thien, and the memorial house of General Secretary Truong Chinh.
Nam Dinh has over 70 trading villages with traditional professionals and products. Many are already famous domestically, such as La Xuyen wood carving, Cat Dang lacquer, Tong Xa copper casting, Vinh Hao rattan knitting, Co Chat silk weaving, and Vi Khe bonsai.
Nam Dinh Province has 72 kilometres of coastline with beaches which have been built into attractive sea tourism spots such as Thinh Long (Hai Hau district) and Quat Lam (Giao Thuy District). Especially, Giao Thuy National Garden with its mangrove ecosystem, a stop-off for migratory birds, is the first international Ramsar in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. In 2005, Xuan Thuy was certified by UNESCO as an inter-provincial ecological reserve in the Red River Delta.
Coming to Nam Dinh, tourists can enjoy several local dishes like “Nam Dinh noodle” (pho), Pancake (banh cuon) in Kenh village, banh gai Ba Thi, keo lac Siu Chau, nem nam Giao Thuy and rice tam xoan Xuan Dai. Annually, the province greets over one million tourists, with a 10 percent rise year on year. Tourism turnover increases by 14-15 percent per year on average. Nam Dinh really has great potential for tourism development
How will the local tourism promotion strategy be designed in the coming time?
To speed up communication and promotion activities to expand the tourism market, Nam Dinh Information and Tourism Promotion Centre offers many field trips to tourism spots, areas and routes in Nam Dinh province. These trips have created conditions for travel agencies to study and build up tour packages for domestic and international tourists visiting Nam Dinh.
Nam Dinh offers both cultural tourism and eco-tourism. With delta area characteristics – well-off villages, cultural traditions and customs of the Hong River Rice civilization – it is suitable for country tours, with community eco-tourism in Giao Xuan and cultural and historical vestiges in traditional trade villages. Besides, Nam Dinh Information and Tourism Promotion Centre is planning to hold eco-tours to visit Xuan Thuy, and Nam Dien national gardens.
In the coming time, Nam Dinh will coordinate with other localities such as Ninh Binh, Thai Binh, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong to hold tours in the Red River Delta, counterbalancing Heritage Road tours in central area, or Mekong Delta tours in the south.
Could you please talk about recent local tourism investment and promotion?
In the past time, thanks to focusing on investment, diversifying forms and creating unique tourism products, Nam Dinh tourism has improved its attractiveness; thus luring a large number of domestic and foreign tourists. Since 2009, the province has poured much investment into tourism infrastructure. Typical examples are investments into technical infrastructure in Phu Giay, and Vieng market in Vu Ban.
For tourism investment and development, many enterprises have spent nearly VND 1,000 billion on construction of accommodations and services for tourists. Bac Ha Group has started and quickly implemented the project of Bac Ha Resort and Entertainment Centre in Quat Lam, with capital of up to VND 500 billion. In Xuan Thuy National Garden, community eco-tourism is being piloted in Giao Xuan commune and will be expanded to five surrounding communes.
With sea tourism potential, there are many projects rapidly building infrastructure for eco-resorts, including Quat Lam sea tourism spot in Giao Thuy district, Thinh Long in Hai Hau district and Rang Dong resort in Nghia Hung district.
Some routes have been built and improved, such as highway 21B and road 490C, the tourism road project from central Giao Thuy to Xuan Thuy National Garden (phase II), and the route from the dyke on Road 38 to Bao Loc temple vestige.
