Tien Giang Food Company (Tigifood) - a member company of the Southern Food Corporation and Vietnam Food Association - was founded in 1984 with main functions of processing and trading food, fertilisers, natural mineral water and packages.

The average annual food output exceeds 250,000 metric tonnes. In particular, in 2005, the rice export volume reached 299,494 tonnes, fulfilling 119.8 per cent of the target set for the whole year and seeing an increase of 66.94 per cent against 2004. In addition, the expanding export market also pulled up the demand for rice. In 2005, Tigifood earned a total export turnover of US$72,627,998. At present, Tigifood is running eight rice-husking factories, a bottled mineral water factory (Suoi Xanh) and the Phu Cuong farming commodities service centre.

The company has signed deals to purchase rice grown on 3,195.2-ha cultivation area in Tien Giang and 1,092-ha area in An Giang and Soc Trang provinces. Tigifood always abides by the application of the ISO9001-2000 quality management system to meet the requirement for quality. According to Mr. Truong Van Hua, Director of Tigifood, the company suffered great difficulties in 2006 due to complicated market movements. In the first half of 2006, Tigifood fulfilled only 51 per cent of the annual target, lower than the more than 60 per cent of recent years. Hence, the task in the last six months of the year has been harder.

In the coming time, to satisfy the market demand and strengthen the development of the company when Vietnam joined the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Tigifood will continue focusing on producing and purchasing fragrant rice and high quality rice grown by farmers in Tien Giang Province and buying specialty rice in An Giang and Ben Tre provinces. Tigifood continues expanding its purchasing networks and selecting reliable suppliers to ensure the input of eligible and reasonable products. Tigifood will pay attention to exploiting and enlarging its markets, especially major localities of Hanoi, Haiphong and Ho Chi Minh City, strengthening cooperation with international partners and seeking new markets and customers.

To intensify its reputation and the competitiveness of its products, Tigifood will apply a hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) system to its rice help it penetrate demanding markets such as Europe and America. When Vietnam entered the WTO, Vietnamese companies were exposed to a variety of challenges and if Vietnamese companies do not make meticulous preparations, they won’t be able to compete with foreign rivals. Therefore, Tigifood is concentrating its forces to boost investment, renew technology, equipment and techniques as well as renovate its managerial style to keep in tune with the development requirements and trends. Tigifood takes special care to improve knowledge levels for its staff and managerial cadres, encouraging its entire staff to put forth initiatives and proposals for the expansion and development of potential products and services.

In the coming time, with the sound exploitation of its proven strong points, Tien Giang Food Company will certainly have robust and firm development steps and create various reliable and quality products to satisfy higher conditions from domestic and international partners. Tigico will help bring commodities in Tien Giang and neighbouring localities to Vietnamese consumers and international ones.
