Vietnam Business Forum reporter had an interview with Mr Huynh Tan Ky, the provincial People’s Committee Chairman on the socio-economic development.
The district has made remarkable successes for its socio-economic development over the past time. Could you give your comments on this?
Located in Dak Lak province’s north east, agriculture and industrial crops hold a key role in the district’s economic development. Krong Nang gained many positive changes in many areas last year. It achieved an on-year increase of industrial production value 4.71 per cent, of this, the agro-forestry sector up 0.68 per cent, industry-construction up 9.83 per cent and services up 18.23 per cent. Particularly, economic structure transition was implemented well. Besides, the district also saw considerable changes in agro-forestry-fishery sector and forest management and reforestation was enhanced.
As for industrial production and small scale industry, despite price hike of input materials and monetary tightening policy, the district dealt with difficulties and obtained a relatively-high economic growth compared to 2007. Industrial production value was estimated at over VND34 billion, fulfilling 113.8 per cent of the year target and up 25.82 per cent on-year. Additionally, services, transport and telecommunications business activities also showed growth.
The social and cultural aspect gained encouraging achievements. Meanwhile, education quality was improved with learning capacity’s management and appraisal was paid further attention to. The district focused on family and planning and health management activities.
How can Krong Nang be supported to take advantages of agro-forestry advantages?
Krong Nang district owns many favourable conditions for agro-forestry development. However, the district did not gain high growth last year. Therefore, the province will concentrate on ensuring irrigation for coffee growing areas and pesticide prevention as well as agricultural encouragement. In the coming time, it will develop some sustainable and clean coffee growing models, a coffee breed centre and a coffee bud garden. In terms of construction sector, we hope that the province will soon support the province to implement some projects signed with the province in 2008.
What will the district do to realise the set targets in its socio-economic plan in 2006-2010 period in the difficult context?
Last year was an important time for the execution of the 2006-2010 plan. In spite of facing many challenges, the district attained several goods results. Under the plan, the district aims to gain an industrial production value increase of 8-9 per cent against 1994 with the agro-fishery up 3-4 per cent, industry-construction 9-10 per cent and services from 22-23 per cent. Accordingly, agro-forestry-fishery will account for 66-68 per cent, industry-construction 11-12 per cent, services with 20-23 per cent and an average industrial production value of VND10 - 11.5 million per year.
Regarding the social area, all local communes and towns gained secondary school education universalisation. The district has four nationally-standard schools. It generates jobs for 2,500 people, while the poverty rate under the current standard was 11.42 per cent and 14.58 per cent under the new standard.
To reach the set goals, the district will attend to agricultural and rural development and improve farmers’ living condition. In parallel with comprehensive agricultural development, the district will develop handicraft industry based on its potentials. It will create incentives for investors in agro-forestry processing. Furthermore, the local will make more effort to fight against poverty reduction and raise quality of health, education, culture and sports along with environment protection.
