Founded in 1986, Hung Vuong Gifted High School, located in Phu Tho province, is known as the cradle of valedictorians.
On September 1, 1994, the school was relocated to Tan Dan Ward, Viet Tri City. After moving to the provincial capital, the scale and quality of education and training was quickly improved. In the 2001 - 2002 academic year, the school had 44 classes, of which 30 specialist classes focused on 10 disciplines (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, informatics, literature, history, geography, English, and French). In the 2010 - 2011 academic year, the school had 1,304 students divided into 38 classes (31 specialist classes and seven ordinary classes), and 129 teachers (35 masters and one doctor.)
The school has attained proud achievements in the past years. All students graduated and more than 90 percent of students passed university entrance examinations. Hung Vuong Gifted High School had 7,431 students winning provincial excellence contests since the 1982 - 1983 academic year. To date, 773 students won national excellence contests (25 first prizes and 175 runner-up prizes) and many scored high marks at university entrance exams. The school had students win International Olympiad medals from the 1996-1997 academic year. So far, nine students have won Olympiad medals and garnered the certificate of appreciation.
The school launched robot creation programmes for students since 2003. The programmes were aired twice on VTV2 - the channel of education and science. With knowledge earned from these programmes, student Nguyen Phu Son won two gold cups at Global Young Inventors Contest in Japan.
With its achievements, the school has been granted many noble awards and titles like Third Grade Labour Order in 1995; Second Grade Labour Order in 1998; First Grade Labour Order in 2002; and Labour Hero in 2004.
In the 2010 - 2011 academic year alone, 52 out of 57 competing students won national prizes, or 91 percent, a record high for the school. Nguyen Thanh Khang garnered the bronze medal at the Mathematics Olympiad Contest in 2010. This was the third year in a row the school had students win Olympiad medals.
Principal Hoang Van Cuong said the school has effective policies to support and encourage teachers and students to work and study to their highest capability.
In the coming time, the school will cooperate with China to create conditions for students to access advanced education methods and activities.
