The bilateral trade between Vietnam and Japan was estimated to have reached US$4.2 billion in the first five months of this year, up 8 per cent on-year, local media reported.

Exports to Japan have kept rising in recent years, boosting the market share of Vietnamese products in the country to nearly 1 per cent, said the Vietnam Trade Office in Japan.

So far, Vietnam has exported 25 products to Japan, with majors being crude oil, coal, plastic products, silks, rubber, coffee, electric wires, seafood, footwear, garments and textiles, woodwork products and handicrafts.

Vietnam-Japan trade climbed to nearly US$10 billion in 2006, up 21.8 per cent on-year, said the office. Vietnam earned US$5.6 billion from goods exports to Japan, up 24.1 per cent on-year while spending US$4.3 billion on Japanese goods, up 18.9 per cent.

Vietnam maintained a US$1.3-billion trade surplus with Japan, it explained.

The two countries are striving to expand bilateral trade to US$17 billion by 2010. The figure may climb US$18 billion by the year if the two countries sign an economic partnership agreement (EPA) soon. (Laborer)
