Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) will invest VND1.1 trillion (US$68.75 million) to build transmission stations and electricity grids for five central highlands provinces, the Vietnam Economic Times newspaper reported May 19.

Of the money, the government will contribute 85 per cent and the rest of 15 per cent from EVN, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said.

Under the project, 1,240 transformer stations, 2,500 kilometers of middle-voltage lines, 2,700 kilometers of low-voltage lines will be built in the region.

The project will benefit nearly 120,000 local households in 1,200 hamlets in Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Kon Tum and Lam Dong provinces.

As of late 2007, Vietnam had about 1,000 hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 6,000 MW, said the Ministry of Industry and Trade. (Vietnam Economic Times)
