Trade between Vietnam and Chile is forecast to hit $300 million in 2010, soaring 30.43% from a year earlier, the Chilean Ambassador to Vietnam Jaime Rivera said.

Vietnam exported $20.5 million worth of goods to Chile in the first quarter, up 13.3% on-year and imported $36 million, jumping 323.5%, according to the ambassador.

Chilean businesses are keen on investing in mining and information technology in Vietnam, Jaime Rivera said, adding that Vietnamese firms could boost their exports of cloth, sport shoes, fruits, coffee, rice, seafood and crude oil to the Latin American nation.

Vietnam and Chile have been in negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA) since 2008 which is expected to be signed in 2011, facilitating the bilateral trade ties.

The two-way trade surged to $230 million in 2009, of which Vietnam reaped $126.1 million from exported goods and imported $104 million. (VNA, Vietnam Economic Times)
