Industrial Parks in Vietnam Southern Province Almost Left Unused
Most of the land in industrial parks (IPs) in the Mekong Delta province of Long An has not been leased while local residents have expressed concern about the unused land, the Vietnam News Agency said Monday.
The province has built 23 IPs covering a combined area of 9,734ha within the past ten years, but these IPs have to date licensed just 374 domestic and foreign companies which leased a total 790ha.
Duc Hoa No. 3 IP, which is located on 2,300ha, has attracted only 23 projects covering a total area of 28ha. The Duc Hoa No.1 IP is also on the same boat with just 144.67ha filled among 757ha.
The locals said they were surprised that the provincial People's Committee still approved expansion of many other IPs when the majority of the existing ones’ area remains vacant.
Farmers had harvested high-yield crops twice a year on the land, but had given up their land to the IP.
Provincial authorities have been reluctant to fine IP investors or resolve IP projects for fear of driving away investors, the agency added. (VNS)
