Intensive application of high technology in agricultural production has boosted Binh Duong’s agricultural development, contributing to agricultural and rural development and stabilization of farmers’ income. The province continues to implement programs shifting agricultural structure in the direction of urban development and high-technology agriculture engaged with the processing industry in 2011 -2015 to build up a developed agriculture with high-technology application, goods production and high competitiveness.
Positive shift of agriculture structure
After two years implementing the Party provincial committee’s Action program 77- CTHD/TU, dated 15th October 2008, and the application of technology into production, Binh Duong’s agriculture has seen positive changes. So far, plantation has accounted for 70.6 percent while breeding has accounted for 29.4 percent of agricultural structure. Agricultural production value has increased by 4.7 percent per year on average, whereas annual production value per hectare of cultivation land reaches VND 58.5 million per year.
Agricultural structure shifted in the direction of producing goods of high value and efficiency, gradually reducing the proportion of plantation and increasing that of breeding. Up to the end of 2010, the percentage of plantation and breeding reached 79 percent and 29 percent, respectively. Perennial industrial plants, with the total area of 133.706 ha (2010), increasing by 9.7 percent against 2006, continue to be a competitive sector for the province.
In addition, the upgraded technology application into agricultural production greatly contributed to productivity and quality of agricultural products. The rate of using new varieties on provincial key plants and animals was 70 percent-100 percent. Productivity was up by 5-10 percent, moreover, quality was also improved; 100 percent perennial cultivation land was mechanized from tilling to tending stages; 80 percent of breeding farms were well equipped with cooling systems and heaters; 53 percent of poultry and 15 percent of pigs are raised in accordance with high-tech processes, which resulted in higher productivity and value than traditional agricultural practices.
In the development of high technology agriculture, there are some projects and programmes implemented by the province in farms and households: Building high-tech agricultural zones An Thai, Hieu Liem, Tan Hiep, Phuoc Sang; Project of Cai stream (Tan Uyen)-based urban agriculture development; Project linking fruit orchard development and Thanh Tuyen (Dau Tieng) ecotourism site; Programme Developing breeding in the direction of modern industry with the application of high tech engaged to processing as well as environment safeguard in the North of Binh Duong province.
Aiming at increasing competitiveness
After the success of Action program 77, the province continues to implement the Program shifting agricultural structure in the direction of urban development, high-tech agriculture engaged to the processing industry in 2011-2015. The objectives aim at building up a comprehensively developed agriculture with high technology application and highly competitive goods production. In addition, through the combination of agricultural development, processing industry and consuming market, it is possible to take full advantage of farming land efficiency in suburbs and unused urban areas. In particular, by 2015, Binh Duong targets to reduce agriculture area to70 percent of total provincial land area; average productivity value/ha/year of VND 70-80 million; average high-tech agriculture value /ha/ year of VND 150-200 million. The province is planning to form 1,000 ha of high-tech agricultural parks, urban agricultural areas, 300 ha of safe vegetables, flower and bonsai, 1,500 ha of specialty fruits; breeding zones with application of high technology, ensuring food hygiene.
The province will also build up and implement core programmes and projects in 2011-2015, such as the Proposal of Development of High-tech Agriculture including High-tech Agricultural Zone An Thai (in the area of 411.7 hectares), Hieu Liem (89.95 hectares), Tan Hiep and Phuoc Sang (471 hectares).
Mr Le Van Rum, Director of Binh Duong Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development stressed: “Development of high-tech agriculture engaged to manufacturing industry is an indispensable trend and suitable with development practices in Binh Duong. The programme is built up and successful implementation will add high value for Binh Duong agriculture, create jobs and high income for farmers in Binh Duong.”
