After the Prime Minister ratified the adjusted Overall Planning of Van Phong Economic Zone, Khanh Hoa province to 2030, the Vietnam Maritime Administration (Vinamarine) and the People’s Committee of Khanh Hoa province reviewed and adjusted the detailed planning of Van Phong international port, Khanh Hoa province to submit it to the Government for approval.
Accordingly, Van Phong Port, which will be located in Van Ninh district, will be able to receive vessels of 15,000 TEUs and become an international container entrepot.
In the early stage, Van Phong Port will be planned to develop into a general multi-functional port to meet export and import demands in the Van Phong Economic Zone, part of Khanh Hoa province and the Central Highlands. Van Phong Port will also partially replace the function of Nha Trang Port when the latter is transformed into a marina - a specially designed harbour with moorings for pleasure craft and cruise liners.

Earlier, the Prime Minister approved the adjusted master planning of Van Phong Economic Zone, a general economic zone designed for various industries. The economic zone focuses on the development of an international container entrepot seaport, oil refinery industry, tourism, services, industry, aquatic farming and other industries.

The development space of the economic zone primarily concentrates in two divisions. Northern Van Phong, covering Hon Gom Peninsula, Dai Lanh area, Tu Bong area and Van Gia Town, comprises an international transhipment port, an international tourist port, port logistics works, industrial zones, tourist townships and residences intertwined with mangrove forests, green spaces, water surfaces, and hills on the peninsula. The non-tariff zone includes the international transhipment port and the tourist port in Dam Mon; the post-port industry and logistics centre; and urban - commercial - financial centres in Hon Gom Peninsula.

Southern Van Phong, located in Ninh Hoa town and Ninh Phuoc commune, consists of a deepwater port, industrial complexes and warehouses, urban and tourism areas built in intertwining with mangrove ecological spaces and sea-facing mountains. This division lies along Provincial Road 652D (formerly Provincial Road 1B) and in the eastern side of National North - South Railway.
