Seeking Investment Opportunities at VIF 2014

Dr Marc Faber, a world-acclaimed investment consultant, will share financial opportunities with Vietnamese businesses at the Vietnam Investment Forum 2014 (VIF 2014) set to take place on June 19, 2014 in Ho Chi Minh City. Ahead of the event, Vietnam Business Forum interviewed Mr Vicente Nguyen, CEO of HVS Vietnam Securities Company and Deputy Head of the VIF 2014 Organising Board, on investment connecting opportunities at this forum. Thu Huyen reports.
What are the purposes of VIF 2014?
Vietnam is opening up many opportunities for international investors. These opportunities come from the equitisation process and divestment of State-owned enterprises (SOEs), from the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) which is likely to be signed soon, and from the perspective of the blueprint ASEAN Economic Community in 2015. Besides, many stock market development measures are being considered by authorities, like widening the ownership "room" for foreign investors, building the derivatives market, completing the legal framework for the exchange-traded fund (ETF), repo, and other products. In addition, Vietnam's market is pretty cheap compared to other markets in the region.

For that reason, Vietnam's market is drawing attention from international investors. Hence, we have thought of holding a forum so the "supply" and the "demand" sides can meet each other.

Why is Dr Marc Faber invited to be the keynote speaker at VIF 2014?
Dr Marc Faber is a legendary investment advisor and one of the most influential figures in the investor world for his correct predictions on global financial bubbles and bursts. In the past one year, he has repeatedly mentioned Vietnam’s stock market when he was interviewed by international television channels. Specifically, late last year, he forecast that Vietnamese stocks were one of 3 best buy options in 2014. Also in 2013, he once said "Money will move from markets with relatively high values to those with an amazing performance. Thus, an investor, if you want to own stocks, I think, you should invest in Vietnam, China and Japan". Vietnam’s stocks must have been something special to be mentioned a lot by a figure like Marc Faber.

Furthermore, he will lay emphasis on global financial situations and picture of burst bubble risks in developed markets. Thereby, he helped businesses to shape their strategies and introduce their strategies to overcome crises and seize opportunities when capital flows into Vietnam.

We believe that his recommendations on stock investment in Vietnam will affect international investors. Some 50 investors will come to Vietnam to listen to his keynote and seek investment opportunities.

So, has Marc Faber invested in Vietnam?
He is currently the Chairman of Indochina Capital, which manages real estate investment funds in Vietnam with a total pledged capital of US$500 million, and the Chairman of US$309 million Vietnam Growth Fund Ltd managed by Dragon Capital.

He also serves as the Chairman and the Member of the Board of Directors in many investment funds worth billions of US dollars worldwide. Currently, he is a shareholder of Asia Frontier Capital and Leopard Capital.

Are you worried about the success of this event, as tensions in the East Sea have caused the stock market to plunge sharply?
Regional markets are on the rise while the Vietnamese market is overreacting. Experienced and visionary investors see this as a good buying chance. Obviously, foreign investors increased their holdings when the market took nosedive. Television channel, CNBC, also said that this is a buying opportunity as good shares are undervalued.
