The Australian Government has released its aid investment plan (AIP) for Vietnam 2015-2020, reaffirming Australia’s commitment to Vietnam’s sustainable development.

Accordingly, Australia will provide Vietnam with an estimated total ODA of AUD89.6 million, of which AUD58.4 million will be direct bilateral aid.

The AIP, which reflects the changing socio-economic landscape in Vietnam and aligns with the priorities identified in Vietnam’s Socio-economic Development Strategy (SEDS) 2011-2020, has three key objectives: enabling and engaging the private sector for development; assisting the development and employment of a highly skilled workforce; and promoting women’s economic empowerment, including ethnic minorities.

“The new AIP is a strong manifestation of Australia’s support to Vietnam in its new phase of economic development. We remain committed to Vietnam’s sustainable economic growth as well as to delivering a high-quality, focused aid program. By helping to stimulate the private sector, up-skill the workforce, and support inclusive growth, we will contribute to achieving our shared, overarching goal of promoting prosperity and reducing poverty in Vietnam,” said Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, Mr Hugh Borrowman.

According to a press release issued by the Australian Embassy Hanoi on October 2nd, Australia has a long history of providing effective development assistance to Vietnam, including supporting the construction of two critical bridges which link people and markets in the Mekong Delta to the rest of South East Asia - the My Thuan bridge and the Cao Lanh bridge, currently under construction.

It has so far provided more than 5,700 scholarships for Vietnamese students to study in Australia and contributed to enabling 82 percent of the rural population to have access to hygienic water via the national water supply and sanitation program.
