The World Bank (WB) is proud to take part in Vietnam’s development process and always supports the nation to fulfil its development tasks,” said World Bank Country Director to Vietnam, Victoria Kwakwa, at a working meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on March 30.

Vietnam has attained achievements in socioeconomic development and become a middle-income nation thanks to its efforts and effective cooperation and assistance from the international community, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said. However, the country still has to face numerous difficulties and challenges in enhancing development, increasing competitiveness, reducing poverty sustainably, promoting health and education, ensuring social welfare and security, overcoming consequences of the war and coping with climate change and high-rise sea level. Thus, Vietnam expects to receive more assistance and cooperation from the international community, including the WB.

In that spirit, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung hoped and proposed the WB would continue assistance for Vietnam in human resources development, policy consultancy and technical assistance, thus enabling it to successfully achieve development goals, avoid the middle-income trap and sustain growth. He also hoped the WB, with its prestige, will continue raising its voice and coordinating with other nations in effectively and sustainably exploiting resources in the Mekong River, especially the water resource.

Ms Victoria Kwakwa said the WB in Vietnam is doing its utmost to cooperate with Vietnamese authorities in launching agreements during the WB President Jim Yong Kim’s visit to Vietnam in February 2016 and in the Vietnam 2035 Report.

She said the WB hailed Vietnam’s achievements in socioeconomic development, response to global crisis, macroeconomic sustainability, high growth rate and social welfare and security guaranty. WB is committed to working with its partners to seek ways and road-maps for the nation to ensure the financial resources for realising development goals as well as ensure budgets for sustainable debt repayment.

Sharing sympathy with losses caused by ongoing severe drought and saline intrusion in the central Coast, Central Highlands and Mekong Delta regions, she said the WB is actively working with Vietnamese ministries, agencies and localities to mitigate the impacts of climate change and extreme weather phenomena over the short, mid and long term.
