On the occasion of the 17th International Trade Fair (VIETNAM EXPO 2007) hosted at Vietnam Exhibition and Fair Centre, Giang Vo Road, Hanoi City from April 4-8, Vietnam Business Forum reporter Luu Hiep interviewed Mr Nguyen Khac Luan, General Director of Vietnam National Trade Fair & Advertising Company (VINEXAD), about the organising activities for this year’s event.
What are the topics of VIETNAM EXPO 2007, after Vietnam has joined the WTO?
After official WTO admission, the gate to the world has been opened for Vietnam, creating numerous opportunities for Vietnamese and international businesses and producers, and accelerating global integration. To date, more than 250 companies from 16 nations and territories have registered for the fair.
To encourage Vietnamese companies to grasp new opportunities for competition, the Ministry of Trade has organised a “Launching Ceremony” to introduce the trade fair to companies, and enhanced export and investment promotion activities. Many foreign companies have registered for the exposition via international information networks, including those from Belarus, South Korea, Iran, Malaysia, the United States, Russia, Japan, Australia, the Czech Republic and China. Key Vietnamese export categories will be presented in distinct areas, aiming to facilitate transactions and help importers find sources at the fair. The three major groups of commodities are woodwork products and handicrafts; farm products, foodstuff and drinks; and garments, textiles, leather and footwear. In addition, VIETNAM EXPO 2007 will launch a website,
www.vietnamexpocenter.com.vn, in late March, to be maintained for a year so Vietnamese companies can introduce and advertise their products. The number of Vietnamese companies registered for participation at the fair reflects the Vietnamese economic outlook and the quality of Vietnamese products.
In previous years, a Vietnamese company had to attend domestic and overseas trade fairs to seek export contracts, but now when Vietnam has joined the WTO foreign partners arrive in Vietnam to set up investment relations with Vietnamese firms and seek import sources.
Previously, foreign trade was carried out by large State-run corporations, but now private companies can export their products to many countries and become prestigious exporters.
Participation in VIETNAM EXPO 2007 offers Vietnamese companies many advantages such as low attendance fees, support from domestic consumers, and gaining understanding of domestic customers’ tastes, habits and demands. Besides, foreign participants also intend to import Vietnamese goods.
VIETNAM EXPO 2006 generated very positive results. Based on the scale of the meticulous preparation work, organisers believe VIETNAM EXPO 2007 will provide even more opportunities for companies than previous events, promoting the country’s export and investment.
Is VIETNAM EXPO 2007 different from other trade fairs, and what are the objectives of this year’s trade fair?
With the instruction of the Ministry of Trade, the activities of this year’s trade fair are designed to assist companies to boost trade. A lot of business forums and conferences on export and import promotion will be open during the trade fair, giving Vietnamese companies the opportunity to meet potential partners and develop export and investment activities. Organisers have also invited producers and trading companies to the fair. To date, organisers have worked with dozens of foreign business delegations seeking import sources for Australia, Belarus, China, Denmark, England, Iran, Japan, Turkey and the United States. Organisers also invited companies in Vietnam to take part in the event. By mid-March, tens of thousands of invitations and brochures introducing attending companies were sent to potential partners.
This is the first time an online trade fair is affiliated with VIETNAM EXPO. The website
www.vietnamexpocenter.com will be launched March 28, 2007 and will exist for one year providing free information for attending companies.
