Vodafone has expressed its attention to invest in Vietnam, a move described as a part of its strategy to expand operations in new emerging markets.

Vodafone said that it has opened a representative office in Hanoi in June to track the privatization process of State-run telecom companies in Vietnam.

The company hopes to buy shares of leading mobile information firms, which are still under the State control.

Vodafone is very keen on shares of Vinaphone and MobiFone, the two largest mobile networks in terms of revenue.

Vietnam now has six mobile phone networks, serving more than 28.7 million subscribers.

However, Viettel Mobile, Vinaphone and MobiFone are serving around 25 million with roughly equal market shares.

In the first six months this year, telephone subscriptions soared to 11 million units, said the government’s General Statistics Office.

With a population of 84 million, the mobile phone market in Vietnam is still huge. (VNA, VnMedia)
