Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung approved a general plan on the development of fast-growing Dung Quat Economic Zone (EZ) in central Quang Ngai province up to 2020 last week, state media said.

The move aims to turn the EZ into a central region’s urban-industrial-service center in the near future.

Accordingly, the 10,300-ha Dung Quat will be developed into a multi-sector EZ covering the areas of industry, trade, tourism, services, urban areas and agro-forestry-fishery business, with oil refinement and petro-chemistry being its spearhead sectors.

The zone will also house enterprises in mechanical engineering, shipbuilding, steel rolling, and cement and consumers’ goods production.

By middle-July this year, Dung Quat EZ had pulled in US$5.3 billion from 119 projects of both local and foreign investors.

The zone is expected to attract additional 25 investment projects capitalized at VND5 trillion (around US$312.5 million) by the end of 2007. (Vietnam & World Economy)
