The Ministry of Trade and Industry said it and related ministries and agencies will jointly launch investigation into apparel shipments in a bid to avoid unnecessary anti-dumping duties, state media said Wednesday.

The move is seen as a positive response to a recent recommendation of the U.S. Ambassador Michael Michalak to set up a self-monitoring mechanism of operations of apparel producers and exporters.

In the first eight months, several traders reportedly sold with prices 90 per cent lower than the previous year. They were Thuan Thien Joint Stock Co., Kim Do Co., Ltd., Kollan Vietnam Co., Ltd., Cholimex Garment Joint Stock Co., Viet Vuong Trade Co., Ltd…, the ministry noted.

According to the U.S. Customs Department, Vietnam exported US$3.3 billion to the U.S. in the first nine months, up 26.43 per cent on year.

Those export categories under the monitoring mechanism recorded an average on year growth of 25 per cent to 30 per cent in the nine month period. Apparel exports of Cat 638/639 grew 98.9 per cent on year during the time thanks to strong growth of 256 per cent in August and 248 per cent in September.

In September, most of the export categories under the mechanism reported reduction in prices under 10 per cent, and category 341/641 was down 13.82 per cent, the statistics by the U.S. Customs said.

In the first nine months, Vietnam shipped US$5.805 billion, up 31 per cent on year. The country targeted to export US$7.5 billion worth of apparel this year. (Vietnam & World Economy)
