Central Highlands Dak Lak province, the biggest coffee producer in Vietnam, is expected to harvest 400,000 tons of coffee in the 2007-2008 crop despite 4,000-hectare loss caused by unfavorable weather conditions, the Vietnam Agriculture reported December 3.

Local districts have started harvesting coffee for the crop with average output of 3 million-3.5 tons per hectare.

Provincial authorities had required local farmers not to pick up unripe coffee in order to ensure nuts’ quality.

Dak Lak province was estimated to export 430,000 tons of coffee in 2006-2007 crop, or 50 per cent of Vietnam’s total coffee volume.

The province is now the biggest coffee grower in Vietnam with 170,000 hectares, up by 10,000 hectares from last year and accounting for more than nearly 35 per cent of the country’s total coffee area. (Vietnam Agriculture)
