Vietnamese consumers are pretty optimistic as the country again showed the highest level of consumer confidence in the Asia-Pacific region, said a survey by MasterCard Worldwide.

The MasterCard Index measures consumer confidence on a scale from zero to 100, with 100 being most optimistic, in which Vietnam ranks first with score of 94.3, followed by Hong Kong with 85.9, China with 85.5 and Singapore with 83.6.

MasterCard carried out the survey on 5,411 consumers in 13 markets around the region.

The leading global payment solutions company said that consumers' outlook toward the economy, regular income, stock market and quality of life has improved from the previous survey done in May.

South Korea had the largest increase in optimism in the region, jumping from 15.6 points in May’s survey to 64.1 points.

Thai consumers regained some lost confidence, rising from a score of 36.7 to 44.2.

However, Japanese consumers are apparently becoming more wary, with their score dropping from 66.8 to 48.6.

Taiwan consumers ranked as the most pessimistic with a score of 29.7.

MasterCard said that Asia Pacific consumers remain optimistic about the coming year despite global financial market volatility, oil prices and inflation costs. (VNA)
