Vietnam Biggest City Lures US$3.5 Bln FDI in Education in 2008
Ho Chi Minh City, the biggest city of Vietnam has to date attracted 61 foreign-invested education and training projects worth a total of US$3.58 billion.
Of these projects, 49 were wholly-foreign invested, with a total value of US$3.56 billion.
The Berjaya international university township project was the largest of these, with investment capital of US$3.5 billion. This is followed by a project to construct RMIT Vietnam University, at a cost of US$44.1 million.
The municipal People’s Committee has proposed that the Education and Training Ministry reconsider regulations governing investment in education to minimize complicated administrative procedures for investors in the field.
HCM City annually earmarks 20 per cent, amounting to some VND1 trillion (US$62.5 million), of its budget for education.
HCM City’s educational sector is striving to reach universal education for all of its secondary school students, meaning more than 90 per cent of those students will graduate in the next few years.
The number of colleges and universities has increased in line with the city’s economic growth. HCM City has 41 universities and colleges compared with 21 training centers in 1990. (People)
