Vietnam’s PC sales soared 12.5 per cent on-year to 365,600 units in the third quarter of 2008.

Although client PC consumption in Vietnam was adversely impacted by macroeconomic elements such as the rising inflation rate and fuel prices since the beginning of July and an unstable foreign exchange rate, the market made a rebound on the back of special programs driven by vendors for the back-to-school period in mid August, IDC, the branch of the International Data Group (IDG) said.

IDC believes the total client PC unit shipments in third quarter of 2008 could be even higher if not for the competitive threat of lower priced secondhand PCs, refurbished PCs and parallel imports circulating in the market.

The client PC market in Vietnam showed signs of recovery in the third quarter of 2008, which will continue into the forth quarter of the year,” IDC stressed.

Vietnam PC market grew 41 per cent to 1.4 million computers in 2007.

Vietnam is forecast to buy up to 320,000 laptops worth US$336 million in total in 2008, up from 180,000 units last year. (Vietnam & World Economy)
