The Laotian government has licensed 15 foreign development investment (FDI) projects valued at US$1.2 billion to Vietnamese firms in the first half of this year, the Communist Party of Vietnam said on June 30.

With the licensed projects, Vietnam is leading in (FDI) in Laos, the CPV noted.

The information was released at a meeting between the Vietnamese embassy and officials of 60 Vietnamese firms operating in the neighboring country, which was held in Vientiane on Jun 29.

In the first five months this year, two-way trade between Vietnam and Laos was US$162.5 million with Vietnam shipping US$72.5 million worth of goods and buying US$90 million worth of commodities from Laos, the Vietnamese customs authorities said.

Thus, Vietnam had a trade deficit of US$17.5 million with Laos, they added. (CPV, Trade & Industry)
