To prepare good traffic networks for economic development, the transport sector of Long An province continuously invests in local traffic systems as well as regional ones.
The People’s Committee of Long An province has instructed the transport sector to focus on building roads linking with Ho Chi Minh City, such as Provincial Road 823 (connecting Cu Chi District in HCM City, National Road 22 and Trans-Asia Road), Provincial Road 824 (connecting with Hooc Mon district), Provincial Road 825 (connecting with Binh Chanh district and Le Minh Xuan Industrial Park), Provincial Road 826 and District Road 8 (connecting with Binh Chanh district). Moreover, roads along the Vam Co Dong River such as Long Dinh - Long Cang Road linking Ben Luc district to Can Duoc district and Provincial Road 832 connecting Ben Luc district and Tan Tru district have been expanded and asphalted.
Together with upgrading and expanding regional roads, the province also invests in provincial roads. New streets help upgrade Ben Luc, Hau Nghia, Duc Hoa townlets and Tan An town into third- and fourth-grade urban zones. They are also conditions and bases for sustainable industrial residential and service development.
The province also pays due attention to investing in rural roads where local people are active contributors. Done by both the State and the people, rural road systems in Long An province are quickly expanded and lengthened to over 2,000 km with a breadth of 1.5 m upwards. The transport sector continues calling for public contributions and other sources to upgrade the above-mentioned 2,000 km of roads.
By the start of 2009, Long An province has more than 4,600 km of roads, including over 1,800 km of four-grade roads or higher. The urgent task of the transport sector from now to 2015 is to build artery roads to facilitate the development of industrial and urban zones along both sides of the Vam Co Dong and Vam Co Tay rivers. These roads consist of Provincial Road 832 and Ben Luc - Duc Hue Road from National Road 1A in Thanh Duc, Ben Luc to Road N1 in Binh Hoa Bac, Duc Hue in the south of Vam Co Dong River, Provincial Road 830 linking with District Road 16 and Long Cang - Long Son Road and Long Son - Ba Nho road in Can Duoc district from Road N2 (Duc Hoa) to Long An Port in Tan Lap, Can Guoc. These roads connect with National Road 1A, National Road 50 and Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Highway to create more favourable conditions for the development of river-side areas.
Ho Chi Minh Road links Duc Hoa district of Long An with Trang Bang district of Tay Ninh province and Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway, Road N1, Binh Hiep - Mo Vet Road and Kinh Cho Gao Waterway are going to be upgraded and expanded in the near future. When these roads are completed, it will help accelerate the development not only in Ho Chi Minh City but also in Dong Thap Muoi and the Mekong Delta regions. Especially, when Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Highway is opened for traffic in early 2010, it will link to Ben Luc and Tan An of Long An province. The new road will be a driving force to boost industrial, service and urban development.
Can Duoc - Cho Gao Road is regarded as the new National Road 50 because it will support the development of Chau Thanh and Can Duoc districts of Long An province and Cho Gao district of Tien Giang province. This road is expected to be built in early 2011. However, the province is still seeking capital sources.
