Vietnam PM Oks Development Plan for Mekong Delta through 2020

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a development master plan for the Mekong Delta region from now to 2020, the authorities of Can Tho city said.
 
Under the plan, the region will be developed into a historical, cultural and tourism center. It is expected to accommodate between 20 million and 21 million people by 2020 and Phu Quoc and Can Tho airports will be upgraded to become international airports. 
 
The region consisting of 13 cities and provinces is expected to become a major energy center in Vietnam by 2020 with three coal-fired plants of O Mon, Ca Mau, and Kien Luong with a combined capacity of 9,500 MW.
 
The region’s GDP is expected to make up 11.6% and 13.3% in Vietnam’s GDP by 2010 and 2020 respectively from the current 10.5%. (Can Tho News)
