Ca Mau is known as one of the leading provinces nationwide in raising and processing aquarium products. Vietnam’s access to WTO has really opened many opportunities for Ca Mau’s exporting aquarium products. With current advantages and potentials, Ca Mau’s goal to reach US$1 billion from aquarium product exports and become a province with the largest aquarium product export turnover in the Mekong River Delta is achievable.

Expand market
WTO membership has brought many opportunities for and cast positive influences on enterprises. During the last two years, facts have shown that the market for Ca Mau’s export activities has expanded significantly. Traditional markets, including Japan, South Korea, China, the U.S and EU, are now added with Africa and the Middle East.

In 2008, Ca Mau witnessed an export turnover of US$640 million, up 6.5 % against the same corresponding of the year earlier, completing 96 % of the plan set. Export in 2008 was subject to many obstacles. However, thanks to efforts made to renovate technologies, improve product quality, and produce goods of high quality which are tailored to market demand, 96 % of the plan set was reached and an increase of 6.5 % compared to the same period of the previous year was gained.

In the first half of 2009, due to impacts of the global recession and a severe lack of materials for production, factories’ operation was below their designed capacity. The export turnover of Ca Mau is estimated to be US$238.6 million, down by 7.12 % against the same period, completing 35 % of the plan set for 2009. However, after July and August, its export turnover has gone up and is forecast to improve in the coming time.

Speed upThe province strives to have its export turnover reach US$830 in 2010, and US$1 billion, in 2011. The growth rate expected for 2011 – 2015 period is 20 % per annum. To this end, many solutions will be activated synchronously, including expanding the trade network with participation of economic sectors, rearranging the retail network, giving priority to the development of a modern retail system, and planning locations with commercial advantages in urban areas to build commerce and service centers.

Beside establishing a stable source of materials and closely attaching aquarium growers and enterprises, Ca Mau always creates every favourable condition to encourage enterprises to expand production and business. Total production capacity of aquarium products for export is raised to 157,000 tonnes per year in 2009. In addition, Ca Mau province enhances management of quality, quantity and food hygiene and safety while making it compulsory for enterprises in the industry to apply quality management programmes according to international standards into their production with an aim to improving their competitiveness.

It is Ca Mau’s viewpoint to execute diversification of market, product and trading methods while abiding by market rules and WTO regulations. Accordingly, enterprises focus on major markets for major products and make adjustments for market shares and trading methods according to market conditions. Such markets as the U.S, Japan, and EU are identified to be key markets while Australia, Canada, Russia, China and South Korea, etc. are potential ones which need to be reached. Domestic market is also paid attention to, being important to accelerate the development of the export market.
