Vietnam is estimated to have exported 1.7 million ton of petroleum products worth US$854 million in 2009, up 41.7% and down 1.6% from a year earlier, respectively, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

The Southeast Asian country shipped abroad 130,000 tons of the products valued at US$85 million in Dec, up 2.36% on-month in volume and up 3.66% in value, the office said.

The sharp increase in exports of petroleum products is attributed to the fact that the nation’s first oil refinery has produced over 1.36 million tons of products since its first operation on Feb. 22.

The state-owned Vietnam National Petroleum Corp (Petrolimex) has signed contracts to buy two million tons of diesel oil from four foreign sellers to meet the country’s increasing fuel demand.
