The Vietnam Internet Center (VNNIC) on Jan 13 announced 100,000 .vn national domain names, ranking the second behind Singapore in Southeast Asia in the number of national domain names.

This is the number of activated domain names, the total registered domain names is up to 120,000, VNNIC’s director Nguyen Le Thuy said, adding that Vietnam reached the goal nearly one year ahead of the schedule because the country aimed to 100,000 national domain names by the end of 2010.

With 100,000 .vn domain names and around 80,000 international domain names, the development of Internet in Vietnam is very rapid, the online VietnamNet newspaper reported Jan 18, citing Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Le Nam Thang.

Though ranking the second in the region, the ratio of national domain names to population in Vietnam is still modest. Meanwhile, Singapore, with only five million people, has up to 110,000 national domain names. This fact shows great potential of the .vn domain name market.

Vietnam has seen the fast growth of .vn domain names in recent years, which averaged at 17% per year. (VietNamNet)
