Sustainable development was the main theme of a Seminar on Cashew nut development strategy to 2010 sponsored by Binh Phuoc province and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) on March 3, 2010.

In the framework of Vietnam Golden Cashew Nut Festival in Binh Phuoc, the seminar was to review the cashew nut production, processing and consumption and design new orientation for sustainable development of cashew nut in Vietnam in the coming years.

Cashew nut is one of the main agricultural exports of Vietnam. Since 2006, Vietnam has become the world leading exporter of cashew nut with 37 percent of market share. According to MARD, cashew nut trees planted mostly in difficult land help improve the welfare of farmers in rural areas.

To maintain its world cashew nut export rank, Vietnam should apply several measures such as intensive cultivation to increase the income of farmers and cooperation with Cambodia and Laos to develop 200,000 ha of cashew nut. Experts also believe that to increase added value for cashew nut, Vietnam must develop processing industry, diversify the products, register trademarks and ensure food safety.

Investments must also be increased in processing of cashew nut for home consumption and improving equipment, especially automatic processing of 80 percent by 2015.

Also on March 21, the Organizing Committee of the festival held a scientific seminar on developing trademark for Vietnamese cashew nut. Over 200 participants including managers, scientists, businesspersons and farmers have agreed on measures to develop the trademark for Vietnamese cashew nut such as increased control of the quality in farming, trading and processing, labour safety and environment.
