Vietnam’s apparel export value is estimated to have soared 18.9% from a year earlier to US$3.04 billion in the first four months of 2010, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

In April, the country has exported US$820 million worth of apparels, up 1.23% from March and up 29.5% compared to the same month of last year.

In the four-month period, the country has spent US$199 million on importing cotton, up 156.1% on-year, US$324 million on fiber, up 58%, US$US$1.47 billion on cloth, up 19% and US$737 million on materials and accessories for apparel and footwear industries, up 24.8%.

Vietnam’s textile and garment sector has targeted an on-year growth of 12% to US$10.5 billion this year.

The number of apparel orders this year will certainly be higher than last year when almost all export sectors were still affected by the global economic downturn, said chairman of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (Vitas) Le Quoc An.

An added many exporters have received orders through late the third quarter and some even for the end of the year, with prices 10%-15% higher than those during the crisis. (GSO April 2010)
