International tourist arrivals to Vietnam are estimated to have jumped by 35.7% from a year earlier to 1.793 million in the first four months, the General Statistics Official (GSO) said.

The sharp increase is attributed to the recovery of the national and world economy and efficiency of promotion campaigns, the GSO also said, adding that the hospitality industry sees an on-year increase of 34.2% to 442,000 in April.

Between January and April, Cambodia, China, South Korea, Taiwan and Australia remain the largest markets of the country with respective increases of 130%, 106%, over 32%, 25% and over 22%.

Visitors to Vietnam for entertainment purposes during the period are 1.127 million, up 39.5% on year; arrivals for business purposes 357,600, up 60.4%; arrivals for visiting relatives 215,000, up 6.5% and arrivals for other purposes 93,600, up 5%.

Last year, Vietnam welcomed 3.8 million foreign travelers and earned revenues of VND70 trillion ($3.8 billion), down 11.5% and up 9%, respectively over a year earlier.

The country aims to welcome between 4.5 million and 4.6 million foreign travelers and earn tourism revenues of between $4 billion and $4.5 billion this year. (GSO April 2010)
