Vietnam imported 3.09 million metric tons of petroleum products worth $1.907 billion from Jan to mid-April, down 19.3% from a year earlier in volume but up 28.3% in value, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said.

Of the total, the Southeast Asian nation spent $1.08 billion on buying 1.723 million metric tons of diesel oil and $424.88 million on importing 612,870 metric tons of gasoline.

In the first weeks of April, the country imported 492,330 metric tons of petroleum products valued at $324.6 million, down 30.3% on year in volume but up 12.4% in value.

The slight decrease in petroleum exports between January and mid-April is attributed to the fact that Vietnam’s first oil refinery Dung Quat has produced 2.9 million tons of petroleum products, including 2.5 million tons sold to the domestic market since its first operation on Feb. 22, 2009.
