ASEAN Labor Ministers Approve Action Plan for 2010-2015
ASEAN labor ministers wrapped up their one-day meeting in Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi on May 24 with a consensus on an action plan for the 2010-2015 period to improve capability in protecting regional migrant workers and boosting the regional labor cooperation.
The action plan focuses on building up legal frameworks, improving the capacity of government agencies, strengthening partnership cooperation among ASEAN members and developing the regional labor market and workforce.
Participants at the 21st ASEAN Labor Ministers’ Meeting (ALMM 21) supported Vietnam’s proposals regarding an ASEAN statement on developing the human resource and vocational skills for the recovery and development of economic growth. The proposal will be submitted to ASEAN leaders for approval at the 17th ASEAN Summit in Hanoi in October.
“Vietnam would give the quality of its labor force top priority in the nation’s strategy for sustainable development,” noted Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung at the meeting.
ASEAN labor ministers also reviewed the implementation of cooperation plans and programs approved at the previous meeting and of the ASEAN Social and Cultural Community’s master plan in the fields of human resources and vocational skills as well as protection of migrant workers’ rights.
Earlier the same day, ASEAN labor ministers had a meeting with three partner countries of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea on developing human resources for economic recovery and growth.
The ASEAN Labor Ministers Meeting (ALMM) is held every two years. The historical 1st ALMM was held in April 1975 in Jakarta. (Local sources)
