Vietnam-U.S. Trade +16.5% to US$3.96B in Q1: DOC
Trade between Vietnam and the U.S. rose 16.5% from a year earlier to US$3.964 billion in the first quarter, including the Southeast Asian country’s trade surplus of $2.3 billion trade surplus, the U.S. Department of Commerce said.
Vietnam exported $3.133 billion worth of goods to the U.S., up 12.3% on-year and imported $831 million, up 36%, the state-run Vietnam News Agency quoted the DOC as saying May 30.
Apparel remained the Southeast Asian country’s biggest cash earner with $1.343 billion in Q1, followed by woodwork products with $393 million, up 26% and footwear with $345 million, down 5.1%, the department said.
Vietnam’s main imports from the U.S. were wastes from the animal feed industry worth $121.7 million, jumping 575% on-year, meat worth $84.6 million, up 10.6% and machinery and equipment worth $77.3 million, up 20%.
The two-way trade fell 2% on-year to $15.4 billion in 2009, of which, Vietnam’s exports decreased 5% to $12.29 billion and its imports were valued at$ 3.11 billion, the DOC said without giving on-year import value comparison.
The Vietnamese General Department of Customs forecast the bilateral trade will surge to $19 billion and $20 billion in 2010. (VNA)
