Typical Cases on Labor Safety

Implementing well labor safety, hygiene and protection is not only rights of employees but also responsibilities and interests of employers. Currently, with efforts and task, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) have actively raised the awareness of employees and employers in the issue. Over the past time, many enterprises have strived to done well labor safety, hygiene and protection, contributing to the production, for example the Can Tho Germicide Joint Stock Company; the Tuyen Quang Urban Development, Construction and Management Company.         
At the Can Tho Germicide Joint Stock Company, the labor safety and environmental hygiene rank the top because the production of pesticides is named among toxic fields. The company’s leaders said laborers who directly attend the production work for below six hours per day and are given breakfast and lunch free of charge and obligatorily. Apart from equipping modern machines, the firm also has treatment system of atmosphere to ensure surrounding environment pure and safe. Protection clothes of workers are always available. Besides the working hours, workers and staff receive care from the firm’s trade union and attend sports activities such as volleyball, football, ping-pong and badminton in order for physical strength. Every year, the firm also organizes holiday for one time at least to beaches to help employees restore their health.       
The Tuyen Quang Urban Development, Construction and Management Company has also implemented well labor safety. The firm’s trade union has played an important role in communicating and calling on employees to strictly carry out rules on labor safety and hygiene. The trade union has more than 200 members with 12 different teams for both administrative and production units. The firm’s employees mainly work in the fields of environment protection, construction and urban services. Annually, the trade union in conjunction with the directorate board to invite experts from the department of labor, invalids and social affairs to attend training courses on labor safety for its members, particularly skills in using labor protection equipment; checking and supervising the work at each unit. The firm has paid attention to equip boots, safety helmets, mufflers, glove, and reflected light clothes for workers. Annually, the trade union signs the directorate board a deal on implementing rules on labor safety under which 100% of members pledge not to violate the rules. In order to ensure the strict implementation of the commitment, the trade union holds surveillance monthly. Any violator will be rejected from the monthly report.
 
Nguyen Quang Vinh, vice director of the VCCI’s department for sustainable development, implementing well rules on labor safety and protection will help to ensure health and raise laborer’s capability. In fact, improvements of the working environment have little cost while the efficiency remains high. To raise further the awareness and responsibility of each enterprise to the issue, it is necessary to mobilize the closer cooperation of authorities in checking and supervising the implementation of rules.
