Key Transport System Upgraded and Renewed

National Road I and National Road 61, with a total length of 79.5km, run through Hau Giang. There are a further 3,414km of intra-provincial roads. However, the majority of these roads have seriously dilapidated, especially on some key routes. Furthermore, most transport services are provided by individuals and private organisations. Public transport has yet to meet local demand for the exchange of trade.

"One of the most pressing issues is to upgrade and revamp key road systems linking the province's centre with important economic areas, and at the same time to adjust and reorganise methods and forms of transport," said the director of Hau Giang Transport Department, Nguyen Lien Khoa.
The department has developed projects to upgrade National Road 61 (organised into seven bid packages), develop and revamp the system of provincial roads 931, 925, 932 and 927, and concretise the rural road network together with irrigation structures. The canal system is being dredged to ensure the smooth transportation and circulation of goods and passengers with particular focus on five canals at level 4 with a total length of 231.75km.

The transport department is setting up a project to open Road 61B linking Vi Thanh Town with Can Tho province, creating a breakthrough in transport activities in the southwest region. It will soon be submitted to the government for approval.
