Vietnam Attends Conference on Code of Conduct to Environment
The Malaysian Forest Dialogue (MFD) recently organised a conference on “Code of conduct - Strengthening confidence for timber industry” at Istana Hotel, Malaysia.
Attendance to the meeting included Malaysian government officials and organisations, European Forest Institute (EFI) as an observer, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and China.
The conference heard 10 case reports and introductory reports represented by companies from Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States, focusing on the following contents: Overview of sustainable development and code of conduct; Experience in development and enforcement of code of conduct; Prospect of code of conduct in Malaysia, etc. The most attention-catching model is the code of conduct of the United Paper Mills (UPM).
Mr Huynh Van Hang, Vice Chairman of the Handicraft and Wood Industry Association of Ho Chi Minh City (HAWA), said: These policies are worth considering and applying to Vietnam, which is in the process of building the code of conduct to the environment for businesses. He added that the code of conduct not only requires manufacturing enterprises but also other stakeholders to have proper behaviours on the basis of their positions.
