The Mekong Chef Contest 2016 took place on September 16, 2016 as part of a series of events under the 10th Vietnam - France Locality Cooperation Conference held in Can Tho City from June 14 to 17, 2016. The contest brought together dozens of chefs from well-known domestic and international restaurants and hotels to compete with each other in catfish cookery.
The Mekong Chef Contest 2016 was organised by the Vietnam Pangasius Association. Using the pangasius as the main ingredient, 20 chefs showed their talent by cooking it into 50 unique dishes - the evidence for the culinary diversity of the popular aquatic species in Mekong Delta.

The Mekong Chef Contest 2016 was mainstreamed with the Workshop themed "Nutrition from Ranee cooking oil and safety in cooking" chaired by Dr Truong Tuyet Mai, Deputy Rector of the National Institute of Nutrition. She said, "Among nutrients found, Omega-3 EPA and DHA fatty acids in fish are highly valued for their usefulness, especially the resistance against many diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It is noteworthy that the Omega-3 EPA and DHA usage history turned a new page in 2014 when Sao Mai Group successfully extracted the valuable nutrients from the catfish in the Mekong Delta.
