Ha Dong township is the political, economic and cultural centre of Ha Tay province, adjoining Hanoi and benefiting from the networks of roads and railways linking Hanoi with Northwestern provinces of Vietnam. Currently, the town has 250 enterprises in all economic sectors including six FDI enterprises. It will be developed into a grade 3 town, a provincial capital of over 45 sq. kilometres with a population of 200,000 people making it most favourable for economic development, trade and tourism.

Its economic growth rate is 12.8 per cent a year (3.2 per cent more than the year’s target); per capita income increased by 7.9 per cent. The economic structure is changing in favour of industry and services. In 2005, industry and construction accounted for 53.25 per cent of the town’s economic make-up, trade and services, 42 per cent and agriculture was down to 4.75 per cent. The targets were respectively 48, 47 and 5 per cent.

Industry and handicrafts have been expanded and upgraded to meet the demand of domestic and foreign markets. The production value of the non-State sector is expected at over VND600 billion in 2005 with an annual growth rate of 36.8 per cent far higher than the 23.8 per cent that was planned.

Agriculture has continued its growth in quality and output with 11.85 tonnes per hectare, up 22 per cent, and cultivation value up by 5.4 per cent a year.

The turnover in trade and service increased from VND490 billion in 2001 to 1,048 billion in 2005. The budget revenue increased from VND39 billion in 2001 to VND218 billion in 2004, or 20.9 per cent a year, while the budget expense increased to 48 per cent a year to meet the demand of socio-economic development.

Together with the modernisation of Hanoi city, major projects in Ha Dong have also been upgraded to link with the communication network, rings 3 and 4. By 2010, Ha Dong will be a grade 3 town and in the future will become a city. Important projects under construction include a new administrative centre, Van Quan - Yen Phuc urban area (to be completed by 2006), Mo Lao urban area, trade promotion centre, Ha Dong market place, roads, bridges and canals, craft villages and industrial centres. With preferential treatment, Ha Dong warmly welcomes investors in the belief that their joint efforts will be of mutual benefit and development.
