Vehicles Sales Gear up on Attractive Promotions, Discounts

5:03:26 PM | 12/8/2006

The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) has announced that the combined sales volume of its 16 member companies in November rose 23 per cent against the same period of last year to 3,807 units.

The rise in car sales in the month was attributed to the growth of the commercial vehicle segment and MPV/SUV segment by 28 per cent and 39 per cent against November 2005, respectively, VAMA said in a statement.

“The high sales growth is from the attractive sales promotion programs by carmakers in the country,” a car trader in Hanoi said. “Ford, Vidamco, Mercedes-Benz, Mekong Auto and other companies are giving generous discounts or gifts to buyers,” he added.

For example, US-led Vidamco is offering a rebate ranging $400 to $4,000, depending on models, for its vehicle buyers while Mercedes-Benz is presenting LCD TVs for buyers of its C-Class sedans.

VAMA chairman Udo Loersch noted that auto sales in November were, however, 6 per cent lower than those in October, but gave no reason for the on-month sales fall.

He said overall vehicle selling volumes by VAMA members in the first 11 months of this year fell 1 per cent on-year to 34,998 units, resulting from the 39 per cent drop in sales of passenger vehicles.

A Hanoi-based car trader said the recent governmental decision to limit the purchase of mission cars for State-funded organizations and corporations has seriously affected sales growth this year.

In addition, many potential car buyers have delayed plans to purchase a sedan in hopes that prices will fall after Vietnam opens its market for imported vehicles following WTO entry.

Japanese-led Toyota Vietnam remains the largest carmaker with sales of 1,252 cars in November, totaling 12,215 units in 11 months, followed by Vietnamese-invested Truong Hai Auto with 546 units and 4,837 units, and VinaStar with 355 units and 2,323 units.

The largest carmaker Toyota enjoyed the highest on-year growth in November, 58 per cent, but Vindaco, which produces Daihatsu cars, reported the highest sales rise in the January-November period with 35 per cent.
