Binh Dinh province opened to traffic the Thi Nai sea bridge and started projects within the Nhon Hoi economic zone on December12, 2006. Thi Nai, with a length of 2.5 kilometres, is considered the longest sea bridge in Vietnam.
This was the first time in its 300 year history, Binh Dinh province has started their conquer of the sea, expanding its urban space to Phuoc Hoa, Phuoc Son, Cat Tien, and Cat Hai, with the Nhon Hoi economic zone and the Thi Nai bridge.
After around two years since the Prime Minister signed a decision approving its establishment, the Nhon Hoi economic zone has attracted up to 40 projects with a total registered capital of US$3.3 billion.
The construction of the Thi Nai bridge and road complex began in November 2002. The complex, valued at VND 582 billion, consists of 6,960 metres of road, five short bridges and the Thi Nai Bridge of 2,477 metres, apart from the Hang Doi point. The Thi Nai bridge, cross the Thi Nai lagoon, links Quy Nhon city with the Nhon Hoi economic zone in the Phuong Mai peninsula, opening up a new development period for the Nhon Hoi economic zone.
The Thi Nai Bridge was built thanks to the establishment of the Nhon Hoi economic zone, three years later. Under the Decision 141, Nhon Hoi is a multi-field economic zone, which will serve as a driving force and an urban, industrial, tourist and service centre of the southern region of Central Vietnam. It will act as a focal point for international exchange and market expansion in the southern region of Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands, linking with the north-eastern region of Cambodia, southern Laos, central Thailand and the Mekong subregion.
Apart from co-operation with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Dinh province signed co-operation agreements with Phu Yen, Quang Ngai, Gia Lai and Kon Tum to support each other in development. With Laos, Binh Dinh reached agreements to plant 90,000 hectares of rubber trees in Attapu, Sekong and Champasak. The province will act as an export and import gate via the Quy Nhon seaport and the Bo Y international border gate.
Recently, a list of investors in the Nhon Hoi economic zone was added with the leading Kazakhstan financial and industrial group, BTA, with a plan to build an oil refinery plant with a capacity of between three million and five million tonnes per annum. Therefore, the start of the Nhon Hoi economic zone is also the start of a co-operation process.
The Nhon Hoi economic zone has a total area of 12,000 hectares, including the commmunes of Nhon Hoi, Nhon Ly and Nhon Hai, and part of the Hai Cang ward (Quy Nhon city) and part of the communes of Phuoc Hoa, Phuoc Son, Cat Tien, Cat Hai and Cat Chanh in two districts, Tuy Phuoc and Phu Cat.
