HCM City Listed among 100 Cities with Fastest Economic Development
Ho Chi Minh City, the largest economic hub of Vietnam, has been selected as one of cities with the fastest economic development in 2005-2020, by US-based Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC).
Ho Chi Minh City is one of nine new cities from emerging economies on the list of 100 cities, in the report published recently by British Financial Times.
PwC said cities in emerging nations, like Ho Chi Minh City, lead the pace of economic growth, not cities like Tokyo, Los Angeles and New York, the biggest cities in the world in terms of economic development scale, not growth.
Ho Chi Minh City, with a population of nearly 6 million people, is the largest economic and commercial center of Vietnam, with GDP accounting for one-third of the whole nation.
The city saw GDP growth rates from 7.4 per cent in 2001 to 12.2 per cent in 2005.
The southern hub has set a goal to attract VND74.5 trillion (around US$4.68 billion) in both domestic and foreign investment capital in 2007, under the 6th municipal Party Committee resolutions.
It also aims to obtain GDP growth of 12.2-12.5 per cent in the year.
In 2007, Ho Chi Minh City will concentrate on calling big foreign direct investment (FDI) projects, particularly in the hi-tech, banking, finance, telecommunications and tourism sectors. (VNA, People Army)
