Vietnam's CPI Rises 0.49 per cent in April

Vietnam’s consumer price index (CPI) in April is estimated to rise 0.49 per cent from March, and 7.16 per cent against the same period last year, reported by government’s General Statistics Office (GSO).
 
The CPI went up 3.52 per cent in the last four months, a quite high level.
 
In April, food and foodstuff group prices, which account for 42.8 per cent of the basket of commodities used in calculating the CPI, rose 0.44 per cent against March.
 
Means of transport and communication prices registered the highest growth of 1.05 per cent on month, since the demand for tourism and transport tickets increased amid festival reason.
 
Housing and construction material prices followed, with an increase of 0.96 per cent compared to March and 10.6 per cent on year as April was the peak time on construction season.
 
Garment, footwear and hat costs were up 0.48 per cent on month and 6.07 per cent from April, 2006.
 
On the contrary, beverage and cigarette prices dropped 0.18 per cent on month, followed by culture, sport and entertainment, down 0.03 per cent.
 
The CPI inched up 0.57 per cent in urban areas and 0.42 per cent in rural areas in the month.
 
The Central Highlands saw the highest increase of consumer price of 0.9 per cent on month, while the Red River Delta region recorded the slowest rise of 0.29 per cent.
 
Among provinces and cities, Dak Lak witnessed the highest CPI growth of 0.81 per cent.
 
The gold price is estimated to soar 1.1 per cent on month and 13.79 per cent on year, the highest growth in a month so far this year, as a result of the world gold market’s increase.
 
The prices of US dollar rose softly 0.12 per cent against the Vietnamese dong from last month and gained 0.63 on year. US dollar prices are predicted to increase less than 1 per cent compared to last year. (Local sources)
