Five Vietnamese enterprises have just won a tender to ship some 300,000 tons of rice to the Philippines between June and August this year, according to the Vietnam Food Association (Vietfood).
The tendered volume consists of 275,000 tons of the 25 per cent broken variety and 25,000 tons of iron-fortified rice, taking the total rice contracted by Vietnam with this Southeast Asian country to 1.1 million tons so far this year.
Based on the offers, three Vietnamese suppliers namely Vinh Phat Trading, An Giang Afiex and Dagrimex, submitted the lowest price of US$328.96 per ton, C&F basis. Their combined offers involve a total of 129,000 tons.
The second-lowest price was made by Vietnam Southern Food Corp. (Vinafood 2) and Kigifac at US$328.99 per ton, C&F, involving 200,000 tons of the grain.
For the iron-fortified variety, Vinafoods 2 offered to supply 25,000 tons at US$348.99 per ton, on a C&F basis.
The Philippines’s National Food Authority said the imports are intended to ensure sufficiency of the grain during the traditional lean production months of July to September.
The Philippines, a major buyer of rice in Asia, plans to import 1.8 million tons of rice this year because of the threat of typhoons and El Nino.
Vietnamese companies are being advised not to sign more rice export deals as total volume contracted for exports has nearly reached the export target of 4.5 million tons initially set by the Government.
Last year, Vietnam grossed US$1.3 billion from shipping 5.2 million tons of rice, mainly to Asia. (Youth)
