Vietnamese Businesses Seeking Opportunities in South America

Leaders from twenty-two leading Vietnamese army businesses have toured Argentina and Chile to seek investment opportunities in a bid to strengthen economic relationship between Vietnam and South America, state media reported.
 
The delegation led by Phung The Quang, Director of the Economic Department under the Defense Ministry met representatives from 40 Argentinean enterprises in Buenos Aires City on June 12.
 
The Vietnamese businesses expressed their strong interest in finding South American partners in the areas of mechanics, electronics, shipbuilding, garments and textiles, seafood processing, construction and services, Quang said.
 
This is the first time such a large delegation of Vietnamese businesses has come to South America, said he, adding that both Argentinean and Chilean enterprises are keen on cooperating with the Vietnamese side.
 
The trip, organized by the Economic Department under the Defense Ministry, is part of the national trade promotion program 2007. The department will hold other tours to Turkey and Republic of Czech next month.
 
Duong The Hung, Vietnamese Commercial Counselor in Argentina, said that two-way trade between Vietnam and Argentina is estimated to reach US$248.5 million last year, to which Vietnam’s exports contributed US$42 million
 
Vietnam’s main exports to Argentina are garment and textiles, footwear, electronics, mechanical equipment, coffee, wood-based products and handicrafts. 
 
Vietnam-Chile trade turnover is forecast to rise to US$300 million annually between 2007 and 2010 from US$163.6 million in 2006, a report of the Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) at a March 26 workshop in Hanoi was told. (VNA)
