Russia Resumes Vietnamese Seafood Imports
Russia will resume seafood imports from Vietnam by lifting a ban it has imposed since April 25 this year, according to a decision of the Russian Farm Produce Inspection Agency (Rosselkhoznazdor) on August 7.
The decision was made after the agency concluded that products of 11 Vietnamese businesses met Russian standards on hygiene and food safety.
In March, Russian authorities found Vietnamese seafood batches contaminated with prohibited antibiotic residues, starting refusal of importing seafood products from Vietnamese companies one month later.
Prior to the ban, Vietnam’s seafood processors were highly successful in penetrating Russian seafood market, as shipments there increased by 16 times in the past three years.
Exports to Russia accounted for 11.2 per cent of Vietnam’s total seafood exports, generating total revenue of US$126.3 million last year
However, due to Russia’s import ban, Vietnam’s seafood products sent to Russia in the first five months of this year increased by only 2 per cent compared to the same period of last year.
Also on August 7, Russia decided to resume beef imports from Sweden. (Vietnam Agriculture)
