Aquatic Output up 9.3 per cent to over 2.6Mln Tons in 8 Months
Vietnam’s total aquatic output in the first eight months of 2007 soared by 9.3 per cent on year, to more than US$2.6 million tons, according to the General Statistics Office’s report.
The report showed that of the total, aquatic production increased by 2.4 per cent to US$1.415 million tons and aquaculture production rose by 18.9 per cent to US$1.19 million tons, against the same period of last year.
Vietnam’s targets for 2007 include total production output of 3.8 million tons, with 2 million tons being caught aquatic products, and 1.8 million being aquaculture.
Increases in shrimp and catfish may only be minimal due to stresses on the environment as well as expected lower rainfall, according to USDA Foreign Agricultural Service’s report 2007 for Vietnam.
In Jan-Aug of 2007, Vietnam exported $2.36 billion worth of seafood, an on year rise of 14.1 per cent. The figure is expected to jump to $3.6 billion by the end of the year
Last year, the fisheries sector plays an important role in the country’s economic development, accounting for 6.1 per cent of the GDP figure and earning $3.4 million from seafood exports.
The bulk of Vietnam’s fishery exports are bound for Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, the US and EU. (GSO Aug Edition).
