Vietnam imported some 110,000 laptops between January and August this year, representing of 190 per cent on-year, according to Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The increase has proved that Vietnamese customers started preferring laptops to personal computers (PCs), the ministry said.

In the first eight months, nearly 75,000 PCs were imported into the Southeast Asian country, 5,000 higher than that of 2006.

The ministry forecast that the computer market in the country will grow by 60 per cent in 2007, with imported computers holding a 35 per cent market share.

Statistics released by market researcher GfK indicated that the domestic demand for laptops is increasing. Foreign brands like IBM, Dell, Acer, Toshiba and HP hold more than 90 per cent of the local laptop market.

Taiwan’s Compal Electronics, the world’s 2nd contract PC and monitor maker, has planned to invest US$30 million to construct a notebook plant in Vietnam to cut growing production costs, military-run Quan Doi Nhan Dan newspaper said.

The firm expects to build a new notebook factory with monthly capacity of 300,000-500,000 notebooks in late 2009 or in early 2010. (VNA)
