Vietnam businesses are reported to import 344 cars via airlines in the first eight months of this year, up from 300 units as of end-July and three units in the whole 2006, said the Ministry of Finance.

All of the imported vehicles were brand new, mainly from Germany, the U.S. with prices ranging from US$16,000 to US$ 80,000/unit, said the ministry.

The sharp rise due to high demand of local markets and high rate of safety and convenience, noted Nguyen Ba Dung, a senior customs official of Tan Son Nhat airport.

The luxury cars were imported by trading companies under orders placed by ‘upper-class’ clients. These connoisseurs are ready to pay several hundred thousand dollars to own luxury and original cars; domestically-produced cars do not appeal to them. (Trade)
